There are a few things you can do.
1) Build a full icon for volume. It 'appears' bigger, and therefore easier to hit.
Or
2) Move the volumes to a different place on the remote. Some layouts have bigger buttons, others smaller.
3) Put vol up and down on *2* buttons next to each other. Then, they are, in essence, double width.
