Why does Power Off leave my TV and receiver on, even though Test turns them off?

In short

In Roomie 10.6 and earlier, Power Off in a room with no Power Off Activity clears the room's current Activity but sends no commands, so your devices stay on. Roomie 10.7 fixes this: Power Off then runs the current Activity's stop commands instead. Until you have 10.7, or for full control over what turns off, add an Activity to the room and set its Type to Power Off.

What Power Off actually runs

The power button at the top right of a room, and the power control on the Now Playing card, run that room's Power Off Activity. That Activity holds the commands that turn the room's equipment off. New rooms get one automatically, named System Off. If it has been deleted, or the room was set up before it existed, the button has nothing to run. The room then looks off in Roomie while the TV and receiver stay on.

How to tell

Open the room's settings and look at the Power Off Activity row. If it shows no Activity, this is your problem. Starting Activities still works, and each device's Test still works, which is why this one is easy to miss. Several rooms in the same home can be affected, so check any room where Power Off seems to do nothing.

The fix

Create a new Activity in the affected room. In the Activity editor, change Type to Power Off. Roomie fills in power-off commands for the devices in that room. Review the list, remove anything you want to leave on, and save. Then start an Activity and tap Power Off to confirm everything shuts down.

What changes in Roomie 10.7

From Roomie 10.7, Power Off in a room without a Power Off Activity runs the current Activity's stop commands, so the equipment that Activity turned on goes off. A dedicated Power Off Activity is still the better setup when you want one button to shut down everything in the room, including devices the current Activity didn't use. If you built a second Activity just to switch things off, you can keep it or delete it.
