Set up your Roomie IR
For every Roomie IR adapter: Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi with antenna, Ethernet and PoE models, in blue or brick red.
Keep this page open, or take a screenshot, before you join the setup network.
Your phone has no internet while it's connected to the Roomie IR. This tab stays readable, but links won't load until you're back on your home Wi-Fi.
Which model do you have?
Look at the end of the case with the USB-C port. A network (Ethernet) port means an Ethernet model, IR-E or IR-EP. No network port means a Wi-Fi model, IR-W, or IR-WA if it has a screw-on antenna. The exact model is printed on the sticker underneath.
-
Place it
All models
- Peel the protective film off both IR windows, the one on top and the one on the front.
- Aim a window at the devices you want to control, toward the IR receivers on the TV, cable box, receiver and so on. It works best within 3 m (10 ft) and reaches up to 10 m (33 ft) with a clear line of sight. One Roomie IR controls every IR device in the room.
- Stick it down with the included 3M adhesive pad, or just set it in place.
- IR-WA (antenna model): to angle the antenna, turn only the black antenna body. Never turn the metal connector it's attached to.
-
Power it
All models
- Plug in a USB-C cable from any standard 5 V USB charger. Avoid plugs with bulky ends, which don't fit the opening in the case.
- IR-EP: power it over Ethernet from a PoE switch or injector (802.3af), or use USB-C instead.
-
Connect it to your home Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi models: IR-W and IR-WA
Ethernet model? Plug a network cable from your router or switch into the network port, then skip to step 4. There's nothing to set up.- Power it on and wait about 30 seconds. A new Roomie IR, or one that's been reset, creates its own Wi-Fi network called the setup network. Its name starts with Roomie-IR-Setup- and ends with 4 characters that are unique to your unit. It has no password.
-
On your phone, open Settings › Wi-Fi and tap the setup network to join it.
Your iPhone will say No Internet Connection. That's expected. Stay connected.
-
Open Safari and go to http://192.168.4.1. Type the http:// part too.
The button only works while your phone is on the setup network. A new tab keeps this page open.
- The page that opens is headed Roomie IR 100 or Roomie IR 110. Under Wi-Fi Configuration, type your home Wi-Fi name in Wi-Fi SSID and its password in Wi-Fi Password. Leave the address setting on DHCP, then tap Save.
- You'll see Configuration saved successfully and The device will restart automatically. The Roomie IR restarts and joins your home Wi-Fi.
- Switch your phone back to your home Wi-Fi in Settings › Wi-Fi.
Use a 2.4 GHz network. The Roomie IR connects over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and Wi-Fi 6 routers are fine. If your router shows separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, type the 2.4 GHz one. -
Find it in Roomie
All models
- Open Roomie on your iPhone or iPad while it's on your home Wi-Fi. Roomie finds the Roomie IR automatically. Your phone and the Roomie IR need to be on the same home network, which they are on a normal home router, whether the Roomie IR is on Wi-Fi or plugged in.
- Then add the devices you want to control: your TV, cable box, receiver and so on. You don't add the Roomie IR itself from the device Type list. That list is for the TV, cable box or other device it will control.
Roomie didn't find it? Add it by hand: in Roomie, go to Devices › Add Device Manually, enter the Roomie IR's IP address and port 4998, then choose the type, brand and model of the device you want to control. Your router's app or admin page lists the Roomie IR's IP address. When Roomie can't find it on its own, it's usually because UPnP is turned off on the router. -
New Wi-Fi network, or starting over
Changed your router or Wi-Fi password? Start here.
- With the Roomie IR powered on, push a paperclip into the reset hole underneath and hold the button for 5 seconds.
- Its network settings are erased and it restarts in setup mode, creating the Roomie-IR-Setup- network again. Then repeat step 3.
Something's not working
I don't see Roomie-IR-Setup- in my Wi-Fi list
Give it about 30 seconds after powering on. If it still doesn't appear, it's probably already set up on a network. Do the 5-second reset, wait, and look again.
192.168.4.1 won't load
Check that your phone is still on the setup network in Settings › Wi-Fi. iPhones sometimes switch back to your home Wi-Fi on their own. Then make sure you typed http://, not https://.
It didn't join my Wi-Fi
Check the Wi-Fi password, and use the 2.4 GHz network if your router has separate names. Then reset it and go through step 3 again.
Roomie can't find it
Your phone and the Roomie IR must be on the same network. Guest networks and "client isolation" settings block Roomie from finding it. Some mesh systems and second routers put devices on a separate network; eero, for example, uses 192.168.4.x addresses by default. Use Add Device Manually instead.
Ethernet model with a fixed IP address (advanced)
Type the Roomie IR's current IP address into Safari to open the same setup page. It has a DHCP/Static option for the network port.
